For most of the year, the Atlantic Puffin makes his home in the mid-Atlantic. Only in summer does he don his beachwear - the brilliantly coloured beak for which he is known - and migrate to land in search of that special someone.
Early explorers reported hoards of Puffins nesting all along the cliffs from Newfoundland as far south as Rhode Island in the United States. Today their summer breeding territories are extremely limited. In Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, the only nesting grounds that remain are on the
tiny Bird Islands. Puffin-seekers can take a boat tour to view them from a safe distance, but humans are banned from the islands so that the breeding habitat will not be disturbed.
